CHARLOTTE — Amateur sporting events already account for half of the region’s sports-related tourism spending but industry executives believe they can push those numbers higher.
Next month, 2,750 fencers, including 11 members of the 2024 U.S. Olympic team, will compete at the Charlotte Convention Center in the 2025 Junior Olympic Fencing Championships. The event runs Feb. 14 through Feb. 17.
With Los Angeles hosting the Olympics in 2028 — the first U.S.-based Summer Games since 1996 — local tourism and sports executives see future opportunities to land exhibitions, trials and other related events in the lead-up.
