STATESVILLE — After a Channel 9 News investigation, crews spent hours Saturday removing patient records from an abandoned Statesville hospital.
PAST STORY: Medical records abandoned for more than 30 years in Statesville hospital
Workers walked out of the old Davis Hospital on West End Avenue with as many as five boxes at a time. They loaded dozens of the boxes inside a large semi-truck.
Thursday Channel 9 shared pictures of the documents containing patient names, Social Security numbers and medical information spread out all over the abandoned building.
"I'm glad to see they're taking care of this. That stuff's been in there for a long time," said a man who did not want to be identified.
He heard rumors the documents were in the building. He went inside to find them earlier this week and contacted Channel 9.
Davis Regional Hospital did not respond to our requests for a comment Saturday.
Thursday a spokesperson said administrators were unaware of the documents. She said when the hospital was located at that address it was operated by an unrelated organization. However, administrators promised to secure, evaluate and appropriately handle the documents.
