Johnson was arrested and charged with a felony hit and run and is in custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office.
Officers told Channel 9 that 35-year-old Brian Wood did not use a crosswalk and was crossing against a no crossing light.
Drugs or alcohol were not a factor with Johnson, and police were investigating if they were factors for Wood.
University City Boulevard and WT Harris Boulevard was shut down for traffic for about an hour.
