NORTH CAROLINA — In a letter to the North Carolina General Assembly, the group ReOpenNC challenged state leaders to join an effort to impeach Governor Roy Cooper.
This comes after Cooper initiated a statewide mask mandate and pushed back Phase Three of reopening for at least three weeks.
“We are demanding all members of the NCGA, regardless of party, to uphold their oath of office by impeaching Roy Cooper,” Ashley Smith said. “We are demanding they publicly affirm our calls to impeach Cooper. As members of ReOpenNC, we will not vote for politicians who do not uphold their oath of office.”
In the letter, the group stated they are looking for the General Assembly members to confirm or deny their willingness to participate in the petition.
They said if the group is ignored, their nearly 80,000 will take action at the polls.
Smith said the group has spoken with several attorneys who have said Cooper, along with other governors across the country, have implemented “illegal and unconstitutional” actions against their citizens.
“It’s sad and unfortunate that other groups had to burn down businesses and tear down statues to get Cooper’s attention,” Smith said. “We won’t do that but, we will not let our elected officials off the hook and shirk their responsibilities and their Oath of Office. They will be held accountable.”
She added Deputy Majority Whip Rep. Pat McElraft from District 13 responded to their letter saying, “Yes, absolutely.”
The group said they have 5,000 people who have already signed the petition with more signing daily.
“People have simply had enough,” Smith said.
ReOpenNC plans to bring their case directly to the General Assembly at their offices on Wednesday.
“The only hope to save our state from a democratic-socialist takeover is the North Carolina General Assembly, Smith said.
In response, Cooper’s office issued the following statement:
“Pandemic response is not a time for partisan politics. As states around the country have to backtrack after rushing re-opening and spiking new cases, Governor Cooper will continue to be guided by science and the law working to keep North Carolinians safe.”
