PHOTOS: Former textile mill-turned-brewery set to open in Concord

CONCORD, N.C — The taps will be flowing at Southern Strain Brewing Co. this week. The Concord brewery is gearing up for its grand opening on Friday.

The 15,000-square-foot brewery and taproom sits at 165 Brumley Ave. NE, just blocks from the heart of downtown Concord. That former textile mill dates to the 1880s and is tucked into the historic neighborhood.

“Until we came along, most people didn’t know this building existed. We kind of found a diamond in the rough,” says Jake Allen.

Allen and friends Bart Roberts and Ford Craven — all Concord residents — are the majority partners behind the $500,000 venture. Roberts also is head brewer.

Southern Strain is the culmination of years of “what-ifs” for the trio.
