CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A Charlotte cab driver died in an early morning crash. Police said the man who hit him was drunk, and speeding.
At the east Charlotte office for Speedy Cab Co. on Eaton Road, calls of sympathy were coming in as fast as calls for service on Friday.
Even though police have not officially released the cab driver's name, his co-workers at Speedy Cab identified him as Paul Miller, a driver for the company for more than three years.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police want to talk to anyone who might have seen the deadly crash around 2 a.m. Friday at East Woodlawn and Montford Drive.
Police said the cab driver was killed when he was making a left turn from Montford onto Woodlawn and was hit broadside.
Police charged 23-year-old Justin Miller with felony death by vehicle, felony hit-and-run, DWI and driving with a revoked license.
Police said Miller ran from the scene but was caught not far away. He and a passenger in the 2008 BMW were not seriously hurt.
Cab driver Paul Miller, who is not related to the suspect, died on the way to the hospital. He was not wearing a seat belt, and was ejected from the cab.
On Friday, the sidewalk at the crash scene was littered with shattered car parts. Some pieces of the vehicles were several feet from the road in the woods.
Luke Hill drives a truck through that part of Charlotte every day.
"It's tragic. It's always sad when a life is taken because of a drunk driver," Hill said.
Police said Justin Miller should not have been driving. He was arrested for DWI on April 3 in Huntersville, and his license was suspended.
Miller was treated and released from the hospital. He's expected to be in court Monday.
