Police chase out of Charlotte ends with car in Lake Wylie, driver arrested

LAKE WYLIE, S.C. — A driver has been arrested after a chase that began in Charlotte Thursday night ended in Lake Wylie, just north of Rock Hill.

Video sent to Channel 9 from a viewer on Lake Wylie Drive showed the suspect’s Dodge Charger in the water at the end of the private road. Officers could be seen on the shore ordering the driver to put his hands in the air and surrender.

The suspect was put in handcuffs and placed in the back of a Charlotte-Mecklenburg police cruiser.

CMPD started chasing the driver around 7 p.m. near Beatties Ford Road because they said the car was connected to a previous crime.

The driver led police on a pursuit all the way to the lake, where he drove into the water.

The sheriff’s office dive team recovered 419 grams of marijuana in the Dodge Charger, said Trent Faris, spokesman for the York County Sheriff’s Office. Dive team officers also recovered a handgun in the water, Faris said.

Deputies charged Kendell Xzavier Jackson, 27, of Charlotte, with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, failure to stop for a blue light, no driver’s license, open container in a vehicle, and fugitive from justice, according to York County jail records.

Jackson was being held without bond at the York County Jail.
