Missing Gastonia woman’s car found abandoned on I-85; police, family worried

GASTONIA, N.C. — Detectives with the Gastonia Police Department are asking the public for help as they try to find a missing 30-year-old woman.

Laporscha Chantal Baldwin, of Gastonia, last spoke with family members around 2 p.m. on Sunday, and they have not been able to contact her since then, police said.

Laporscha Baldwin’s vehicle was found abandoned along Interstate 85 between Sam Wilson Road and Belmont.

Police stressed on Wednesday that so far, no crime has been committed.

Detectives believe that Laporscha Baldwin may have had recent contact with her ex-boyfriend, Charles Combs, 35, of Charlotte. Investigators have not been able to locate Combs.

Police have LaPorscha Baldwin’s phone, and they determined that after she left the church, she had a conversation with Combs.

She had broken up with Combs about three weeks ago.

Channel 9 learned that he was convicted of second-degree murder in Scotland County in 2007 and spent almost nine years in prison.

Police said that doesn’t make him a suspect.

Authorities said the disappearance is strange and he is not answering their calls.

“All these factors raise the level of concern for our investigators that we want to try to locate her as soon as possible,” said Rick Goodale, with GPD.

Detectives believe Combs can help them by sharing information about that last conversation.

Police said they have responded to calls from LaPorscha Baldwin’s family but didn’t tell them anything helpful.

Family members told Channel 9 that they are concerned for Baldwin’s welfare.

“That’s my baby out there somewhere, and I don’t know where she is,” her mother, Marilyn Baldwin, said.

Marilyn Baldwin said her daughter was headed to work in Huntersville Sunday.

They met at the parking lot of First Antioch Interdenominational Church.

LaPorscha Baldwin kissed her 18-month-old daughter and said, ‘I love you,’” Marilyn Baldwin told Channel 9 reporter Ken Lemon.

LaPorscha Baldwin left and never returned. She didn’t call to check in on her young daughter, as well.

Never called or checked on her daughter.

“Her daughter is her heart,” Marilyn Baldwin said. “She would never leave her daughter”

Marilyn Baldwin said her daughter’s abandoned car makes her think something happened.

Laporscha Baldwin is 5 feet, 2 inches tall and weighs about 190 pounds. She has brown eyes and dark hair and was last seen wearing a rose-colored blouse, blue jeans and gray shoes.

Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of Baldwin is asked to call 911 or detectives at 704-866-6702. Callers may remain anonymous.
