Teen hit by van during Concord football game expected to recover

CONCORD, N.C. — A 13-year-old boy was hit by a van and suffered serious injuries Friday night, police said.

Jacob Mooney was in the crosswalk leaving a football game at Cox Mill High School.

The driver, a 16-year-old boy, didn't see the pedestrian, authorities said. Officers said they want to check with the district attorney before making decisions on charges.

Friends told Channel 9 it's a miracle he survived.

"I was sad, I was praying for him," said classmate Brianna Barker.

Troopers said he had just left the Cox Mill High School football game. They believe he was jogging through a crosswalk when a 16-year-old driver headed south hit him.

Troopers said speed was not a factor and their investigation shows no cellphone use by the driver around the time of the crash. Though the crash was very serious, they say Mooney is expected to make a full recovery.

"We were saying it was a miracle that he made it, especially getting hit by a van. That's a pretty big vehicle," said George Muldoon.

The investigating officer said he believes drivers trying to turn left into the high school may have blocked the 16-year-old's vision.

We should know more about whether charges will be filed on Monday.
