6 hurt in wrong-way crash involving pickup truck, MEDIC ambulance in uptown

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Authorities are investigating a crash involving a pickup truck and a MEDIC ambulance in uptown Charlotte early Monday morning.

It happened before 3 a.m. on the ramp between Independence Boulevard and Interstate 277.

MEDIC told Channel 9 the ambulance was heading from inbound Independence Boulevard toward I-277 when it collided with a black truck that was going the wrong way.

Officials said two MEDIC crew members were wrapping up their shifts and were driving back to headquarters. They did not have a patient on board at the time of the crash.

Both crew members were taken to the hospital, but they are expected to be OK.

Four people from the black pickup truck were also taken to the hospital, but with life-threatening injuries.

While on scene, our crew could see visible heavy damage to the pickup truck and several different agencies responding to the crash.

Authorities have not said what led up to the collision or if anyone will face charges.
