Program educates graduates in high-demand trade jobs

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Hundreds of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools students will graduate from high school this year with no plans for college but a new program is offering to train them in high-demand trades for free.

Brieyonna Bowman will take advantage of the new program next year.

The sophomore at Harding University High developed an interest in carpentry while taking a class at her high school.

Next year, she’ll take advantage of a new program that trains in fields like carpentry and plumbing. They are fields that are in high demand in the construction industry.

They are also high-paying jobs. In the program, Bowman would gain high school and college credits at the same time. Afterward, she would graduate with validated credentials and could move right into the workforce.

“I think it's going to help me because I get to dig deeper in what I started learning here,” she said.

The program will be provided through a partnership between Central Piedmont Community College, Goodwill, CMS and the ROC.
