Queen City Ghost Tours: Family friendly way to spend Halloween

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Prepare for a family friendly scare this Halloween by taking a trip back to the 1770s and onward with Queen City Ghost Tours, a touring company that has been in Charlotte for nearly 20 years.

On Monday, Eyewitness News spoke with the director and founder of the company, Jay Whipple, to learn more about the tours that are on the rise this Halloween.

Queen City Ghost Tours was founded in 1993 and is currently continuing to grow.

"We decided to take the general history and add a little bit of flavor with ghosts. We did some research and found that there are a lot of ghosts in the historic district of Fourth Ward, and we uncovered those ghosts on our Queen City's Ghost Tour," said Whipple.

Whipple said the tours are roughly an hour and fifteen minutes.

"We have a walking ghost tour as well as a driving ghost tour, and they are scheduled year round and conducted based on demand," said Whipple.

Whipple said that the Elmwood Cemetery located off of West Sixth Street is one of many locations that the tour makes a stop at.

"We also visit the Old Settlers Cemetery in the Fourth Ward," he said.

Whipple credits his knowledge of the ghosts to hours and hours of research, as well as speaking with real people that are from Charlotte.

The walking and riding tours range from tales from the Revolutionary War in the 1770s to the Civil War in the 1860s – encompassing creepy tales and hauntings that linger in homes, cemeteries, hospitals and streets of Charlotte.

According to Whipple, the weirdest story on the tour involves a firefighter in which a tragedy occurs on April Fool's Day.

The tour encompasses bizarre and worst events in the Charlotte area.

The Queen City Ghost Tours focus on ghosts, ghouls and goblins, also known as the people who have been left behind.
