Rain and wind causing trees to fall around Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Heavy rain and wind is causing dozens of trees to fall in and around Charlotte. So many trees are falling, Duke Energy crews cannot get to them all at once.

In east Charlotte, cars dodged small barricades blocking a downed tree on Sharon Road around 6:00 a.m. Road blocks were placed in lanes but there was no police or power company supervision.

Cars ignored the barricades, driving right by a tree in the middle of Sharon Rd.

In west Charlotte off Wickham Lane, Petra Cherry woke up to a loud bang, a tree crashed through her roof and right into her kitchen.

"My heart was beating so fast," Cherry said. "My first thought was to get the dog and leave the house before I get buried in it."

The Charlotte Fire Department and Red Cross assisted Cherry. Cherry is forced to stay in a hotel room for the next couple days due to damage.

A century old tree in South End on Annlin Avenue caused massive damage and power outages as well.

According to a neighbor, the family who lives in the house impacted typically parks in the driveway. But after tree branches continued to fall, the family parked on the street.

The tree that fell would have taken out their cars in the driveway.

"It looks like something from a horror movie," Emmie Addison, the next door neighbor, said. "It sounded like a frieght train."

The City Arborist is encouraging people to call 911 if they say see downed trees. If it is not an emergency, call 311.
