182 beaches in the Carolinas had 'potentially unsafe water pollution levels'

A new report shows thousands of beaches, including some in the Carolinas, had unsafe levels of water pollution on at least one day in the last year -- and some had a lot more than that.

Sources of the pollution included runoff from cities, sewage overflow, and failing septic systems.

According to the report, there was also concentrated livestock manure in the water.

In North Carolina, three beaches in Beaufort County made the list, including the Pamlico River City Park.

Officials said 127 of 213 beach sites sampled in North Carolina were deemed "potentially unsafe for at least one day in 2018."

In South Carolina, Myrtle Beach at 24th Avenue North had 30 unsafe beach days.

Five other beaches in the Myrtle Beach area were ranked in the report's "Top 10 Beach Sites by Most Potentially Unsafe Swimming Days."

Four other locations in Horry County also made the list.

According to the report, 55 of 122 sampled South Carolina beach sites were said to be potentially unsafe for at least one day last year.
