STOKES COUNTY, N.C. — Two former Stokes County animal shelter employees are being investigated for accusations of cruel and inhumane euthanasia practices.
New documents show an inspector found evidence that the former shelter director Phillip Handy and employee Darryl Sheppard "performed, participated in and witnessed the inhumane euthanasia" of multiple animals.

The report said that in one instance an animal was euthanized by a gunshot. It also accused the men of failing to confirm the death of an animal and improper disposal of an animal.
The state has since revoked both men's certifications to perform euthanasia.
Stokes County Manager Rick Morris said both men are no longer employed with the county.
Community members have raised about $180,000 so far for a new no-kill shelter.
