UNCC to test wastewater at dorms, hoping to detect presence of COVID-19

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — One thing that makes fighting COVID-19 so challenging is that many people don’t show symptoms for many days or ever at all.

Researchers at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte are hoping that by testing sewage at dorms, they can get an idea of whether the people who live there might need to be tested for the virus.

“You can detect the virus between 3 to 5 days in advance. Some studies have shown up to a week in advance,” said UNCC researcher Dr. Cynthia Gibas.
