Residents celebrate one of Charlotte's oldest affordable housing communities

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — For the first time, a long-standing south Charlotte neighborhood is celebrating a community reunion as the area nearby explodes with development.

Brookhill Village, in South End, is one of the oldest remaining affordable housing communities in Charlotte.

With food, music and fellowship, residents encouraged anyone who has ever lived there to celebrate the neighborhood.

“We're just trying to keep Brookhill here for affordable housing people,” resident Antoinette Davis said. “I've been here now nine years and my grandma was the third or fourth person to move here back in 1950 when it first opened."

City leaders are asking for a $50 million bond referendum to help keep current affordable housing options.
