Elizabeth residents frustrated over nighttime bridge construction

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A Charlotte woman says noise from construction on the Hawthorne Lane bridge has kept her awake for three nights.

“Our road, which used to be like a nice residential street, has turned into our construction zone,” Laura Williams said.

It’s not just the noise that has her frustrated.

“Honestly, it felt like an earthquake,” she said. “Our beds started to shake and you could feel the road. It felt like some kind of natural disaster.”

Crews are taking apart the Hawthorne Lane bridge as part of work to extend the city's streetcar, the Gold Line.

Most of that major work happens in the middle of the night.

Williams said neighbors want some information from the city, like detailed communication, bridge deconstruction during the day and residents’ feedback.

"We are looking at how we can help mitigate the noise." said Krystel Green with Charlotte Area Transit System.

CATS said they're forced to work at night because lanes on Independence Boulevard have to be closed for bridge demolition.

North Carolina Department of Transportation officials said those closures can only happen between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. Sunday through Thursday.

The bridge is not scheduled to reopen until 2019.
