Chad Kenney, a retired service member, rendered aid to a man in his 60s who was shot Tuesday morning at an Uptown Charlotte apartment complex, likely saving his life.
The shooting happened at about 5:30 a.m. at the MAA Gateway apartments on West Fifth Street.
“I was awakened in my apartment at MAA Gateway to a loud bang,” said Kenney, who served in the U.S. military for 20 years.
He got up and checked it out.
“I then went to the door and didn’t hear any more movement or sounds other than the victim,” Kenney said.
The shooting victim was screaming and sounded like he was in a lot of pain, Kenney said.
The victim was bleeding out from a gunshot wound in front of the trash shoot in a hallway.
“So, I immediately grabbed a towel from my bathroom and ran back out and started applying pressure and speaking to the victim and kept him calm,” Kenney said.
Kenney said he stayed with the victim, who also lives at MAA Gateway, until police and paramedics arrived.
“(To) keep him calm, keep the blood flow from being exacerbated,” Kenney said.
The suspect told police he didn’t know the suspect, according to a police report.
It’s unclear if the shooting was random.
The victim has not been helpful with detectives. No arrests have been made.
