Safety becomes issue at Charlotte transit center as complaints mount

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The issue of safety at the transit center in uptown Charlotte has been a growing as police respond to the area on an almost a daily basis.

Police have been called out 37 times to the transit center, between Trade and Fourth streets, in the past four weeks. Most of the calls were for thefts, but 12 were for assaults and two for robberies.

“You should feel comfortable when come down to ride the main transit system,” resident Artis Morrison said. “You shouldn’t have to worry about fights or getting robbed.”

One of the fights took place April 6 and was captured on video. The fight carries on for more than three minutes, but security is never seen in the video.

The video showed a young man appearing to attack an older man. It finally came to an end when a third man punched the young man and knocked him to the ground.

Charlotte-Area Transit System released a statement on the incident and other safety-related issues:

CATS is aware of the incident shown in the video at the Charlotte Transportation Center. The incident is currently under investigation by law enforcement.  We take all safety-related incidents seriously and want to remind all citizens that if you See Something, Say Something.
