SPARTANBURG, S.C. — The Spartanburg County coroner's office is trying to determine if a skull found in Spartanburg last week was stolen from a grave last year.
Coroner Rusty Clevenger said investigators wonder if the skull was taken from a grave reported on March 26, 2012.
Clevenger said a man found the skull April 20 in a field about 300 yards from the cemetery where the grave desecration occurred. The coroner said the grave is from the 1960s.
No other human bones were found with the skull.
The 2012 incident was discovered when someone found a headstone had been overturned and the tomb had been damaged.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.
