COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina Department of Transportation officials say 80 percent of the state's 42,000 miles of roads needs re-surfacing or rebuilding. Now, SCDOT is giving residents a look at how they plan to do that over the next 10 years.
The department has launched a website and project list of the projects that'll be funded by the roads bill.
South Carolina drivers are paying an extra two cents a gallon as part of the roads bill. With an event like Hurricane Harvey, oil refineries have been forced to halt production, which is impacting supply, and making gas prices go up.
The good news is that now South Carolina drivers will get a glimpse of what some of our money is going towards. Thanks to the brand new website, it's easier to check in on the progress.
The plan is for SCDOT to improve 100 miles per year, replace 750 bridges, and widen more than a dozen interstates.
Hundreds of projects are on the list.
There are 24 projects in the works for York County, 27 in Lancaster County and 13 in Chester County.
Representatives with SCDOT said the first projects that will be done are the "worst of the worst" existing projects that will be easiest to complete.
Several of the projects are older rural roads, or roads or bridges over swamps and swashes. Officials say they're safe, but they do need to be upgraded.
Quite a few of those projects currently have "TBD" next to them because the money isn't in yet.
SCDOT said they know which projects they'll plan to do because they expect $149 million within the first year of the roads bill, but they can't set up a contract to do the work without the money first.
To find out when a project near you is expected to be done, you can click here.
To find exactly where the project is, you can type the project code in on the SCDOT Street Finder.
The 10-year goal is to bring half of those roads up to a "Good" rating. Specific projects will be added to the list on the website as the new revenue accumulates.
