‘A second chance’: Why some criminal records are now being wiped clean

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — There’s new hope for people who committed crimes as teenagers.

He committed a non-violent crime at 16 years old.

Like many others, he paid for it years after turning his life around -- haunted by a record.

“It still impacts their ability to get jobs, to secure housing, to provide for their families,” Mecklenburg County District Attorney Spencer Merriweather said.

But, a new law is helping some people clear their record.

“It means everything to me, it means a second chance,” resident David Duncan said.
