Security addressed as CIAA Tournament approaches

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Thousands will pour into the Charlotte CIAA Tournament on March 3 and security is a concern because for the past four years, violence has erupted during the busy weekend.

Police said they're working with party vendors to keep everyone safe.

Former Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Detective Gary McFadden has been coordinating security between the police department and the CIAA.

He has been talking to venue officials about security for after parties and about being aware of the artists that are booked including their criminal history.

"Know what you're getting,” McFadden said. “Know what to expect. If you have somebody with a past, at least you know that past may follow them."

In one incident last year, 100 shots were fired in a gunfight, hitting homes and cars.

The target was rapper Young Dolph. He was in a bulletproof car on North Caldwell Street in uptown.

No one was injured.

He talked about his close call on The Breakfast Club radio show in New York.

"Nobody hit, no nothing,” Young Dolph said on the show. “You all need to find another hobby. You all need to find something else to do."

McFadden said that a lot of restaurants will rent out their facility to a promoter who may be unaware of who's coming to entertain.
