Southeast Charlotte elementary school gets low health score on first day

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Rama Road Elementary School got an 81.5 health score on its first day of school, and a health inspector found evidence of mice and mold, according to a report.

A parent who is concerned and involved with the school is confident the issues will be quickly resolved.

Doug Caldwell has spent years volunteering at Rama Road Elementary to be close to his two daughters, one who is in the third grade.

The other just graduated from the elementary school.

"I've got all the confidence in the world that it's, everything is going to be OK," Caldwell said.

County health inspectors said any score below 90 is bad.

The inspector found water backing up from drains Monday in some the school's bathrooms.

A plumber was immediately called in for repairs.

The inspector also found microbial growth in the ceiling of boys’ and girls’ bathrooms in one part of the building.

The boys’ bathroom also had wallpaper peeled from the walls, and the girls' bathroom had a hole in the ceiling.

There were stained ceiling tiles in several classrooms and in one room, the inspector discovered mice droppings under a sink cabinet.

"When I saw the health score, my first reaction was to call the principal," Caldwell said.

He said Principal Patricia Denning told him some violations came from a portable classroom that is not in use, and the school is already requesting a re-inspection.

"As soon as I called her, got information about the score and some additional context -- felt very comfortable that the problems were being corrected and that things are being done," Caldwell said.

CMS said it has budgeted for more maintenance staff.

District officials said CMS Building Services works to provide a clean and safe learning environment for all students and staff at all CMS properties.

They also said the corrections required by inspectors in this report will be completed Wednesday.
