RALEIGH — A woman in Lincoln County won $1 million in the Powerball lottery after matching all five white balls in the Sept. 28 drawing. Cristy Silene Mendes Medina Flor purchased her winning $2 ticket at the 7-Eleven on Atwater Lane in Denver.
Flor claimed her prize at lottery headquarters on Friday. After required tax withholdings, she received a final payout of $660,100.
Flor selected her numbers at random rather than following a specific numerical pattern. Mendes Flor, the Powerball lottery winner, said the sudden realization of her win left her feeling overwhelmed.
“I’m still processing all of this,” Flor said. “It was a mix of all these different emotions at one time.”
Upon discovering the winning numbers, she immediately reached out to her relatives.
“I called my aunt and uncle and was like, ‘I think we won the lottery,’” Flor said.
Flor stated that she has not yet decided how she will use her winnings, crediting the result to her faith. The overall odds of winning a Powerball jackpot are 1 in 292 million.
