Stormwater crews prepare for next batch of heavy rain

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The strong storm that hammered the Charlotte area Monday caused issues for some area waterways, and city workers were busy Wednesday morning preparing for the next batch of storms expected to arrive Wednesday afternoon.

Reporter Gina Esposito was with crews along the Little Sugar Creek Greenway, an area that is at risk for flash flooding. The creek was completely blocked with debris around 10 a.m.

Crews were monitoring hot spots throughout Mecklenburg County working to address concerns about buildup from Monday's storm.

Stormwater crews were removing branches and twigs that collected in the creek after Monday’s storms. The crews are concerned about the potential risk of flash flooding with the heavy rain moving through the area Wednesday afternoon.

The county has had workers scattered throughout the area checking out hot spots since last weekend, and they’re also working to address individual concerns from residents.

“We are hitting all of our hot spots today,” said Mark Boone of Storm Water Services. “We are actually asking people if they see a blockage to call 311.”

Stormwater officials told Channel 9 that the last time the Little Sugar Creek area flooded was in December, 2015.

"We have cameras on about eight locations that tell us what's going on," Boone said. "We also have hot spots that we physically check before a storm."
