GASTON COUNTY, N.C. — A man has been arrested and charged after police said he stole an ambulance from a Gaston County Medical Center Friday night, then led police on a high-speed chase.
The incident started around 8:30 p.m. after 29-year-old Joshua Kyle Poindexter stole a Dallas Rescue Squad ambulance from the CaroMont Regional Medical Center's ambulance bay.
Authorities said GPS software allowed police to track the stolen ambulance.
They said Poindexter led police on a chase that exceeded the speed limit by 15 mph before he was arrested in Cherryville, almost 20 miles away from the hospital.
Officials said no one else was inside the ambulance at the time and no injuries were reported.
Police charged Poindexter with larceny of a motor vehicle, fleeing to elude arrest, failing to heed a siren and reckless driving.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.
