IREDELL COUNTY, N.C. — A man is dead after a single-car crash on Interstate 40 in Iredell County on Tuesday afternoon, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

Troopers said they responded before 5 p.m. to I-40 near Stamey Farm Road for a car that ran off the road and into the woods.

Rodney Steve Forner, 67, of Wirtz, Virginia, was driving a 2003 Subaru Outback westbound on I-40 when he ran off the right side of the road, went down an embankment, flipped and hit several trees, according to NCSHP.

Forner died at the scene, troopers said.

According to preliminary investigations, troopers said they do not believe impairment or speed contributed to the crash.

NCSHP said one lane of westbound I-40 was closed for three hours as troopers investigated the scene.
