Troopers investigating deadly crash at Iredell Co. rest area

IREDELL COUNTY, N.C. — Emergency crews were on the scene of a deadly accident in Iredell County on Interstate 77 Monday morning.

Officials said the wreck happened around 7:45 a.m. at a rest area on I-77 southbound at mile marker 38.

“The sound was just a large crash and I was able to glimpse over, and then you see a puff of smoke and steam,” said David Lowe, who heard the crash.

North Carolina Highway Patrol troopers said the accident involved a car and a tractor trailer and that it appeared the car never braked before crashing into the back of the big rig.

Troopers said the rest stop will be closed while they investigate.

No further details were immediately available.
