None — Dozens attended a vigil Monday night in honor of two young brothers who were hit by a truck and killed in West Charlotte last week. Wednesday, 5-year-old Kadrien Pendergrass was pushing his 1-year-old brother Jeremy Brewton Jr. in a stroller along the shoulder of Shady Lane and Tyvola Road.
The boys were walking to day care with their father and 8-month-old sister. Police said the family was hit by a Sears truck driven by 32-year-old Dirk Brown. Jeremy and Kadrien were killed.
At Monday night’s vigil, Lutricia Black told Eyewitness News what she will miss the most about her godsons.
“Kadrien was so inquisitive, always wanted to go to McDonald’s and play on the computer," Black said. “Jeremy, he would just look at you, you know, they were happy little fellas.”
The boys’ parents, Jeremy Brewton Sr. and Adrianna Pendergrass were not up for speaking at the vigil.
The crowd surrounded them in a small sea of candlelight and comforted them with prayers and hugs.
At the end of the vigil, the parents released two balloons tied together into the night sky. It’s just one step in the healing process for a family still coming to terms with the loss of two little boys who had just begun to live.
A funeral for Jeremy and Kadrien will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Greater Galilee Baptist Church at 501 West Park Avenue. A visitation will be at noon. The boys will be buried at York Memorial Park Cemetery.
