University-area hotel could soon become housing

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A real estate developer is looking to retrofit a University-area hotel into housing units.

Widewaters Group out of East Syracuse, New York, recently filed a rezoning petition for the Residence Inn Charlotte University Research Park hotel property, at 8503 N. Tryon St. In its petition, Widewaters says it is seeking a zoning change that would permit a conversion of the hotel into residential units.

A site plan for the rezoning says 91 housing units could be accommodated, which is the same number of hotel rooms at the property. The 2.5-acre site includes six buildings, all of which would remain, according to the plan.
