GASTONIA, N.C. — Dozens of family members gathered to remember the victim shot and killed near a school Wednesday night.
The family told Channel 9 Teresa Sanders was known as Mother Teresa and was most likely killed while trying to break up a fight.
Family members were still trying to come to terms with what happened at the candlelight vigil held Thursday night.
They shared stories about Sanders, sang songs and prayed.
There were also blue balloons on a chair that Sanders used to sit on. They said blue was her favorite color.
Police said Sanders was shot and killed by Mark Collins. Prosecutors have not ruled out the death penalty in this case.
A 15-year-old girl was also shot in the arm during the incident.
"We didn't realize she had been hit. We just thought she had fallen and then we got to her and saw," said Viola Sanders.
Collins made his first appearance before a judge on Thursday.
