Vigil held for teen killed on basketball court

CHARLOTTE — Grieving family and friends lit candles and paused for a moment of silence Thursday night to remember 17-year-old Raynard Mahoney Jr.

Mahoney was shot and killed shortly after a pick-up basketball game two weeks ago on Larwill Lane in northwest Charlotte.

The crime was caught on a neighbor’s doorbell camera.

Though police took a person of interest into custody soon after the shooting, Ray Sr. said no one has come forward with real information.

“My son got shot in broad daylight, in a pick-up basketball game, a block from his house, and all his friends are out there with him, and no one will step up and say one thing,” Ray Sr. said. “Very angry that my son’s murderer may walk free because everyone lives by the street code, sad.”
