Emmy Award winning journalist Jonathan Lowe, a proud native of Charlotte, joined the Eyewitness News team in June of 2022. Prior to that, he may be a familiar face from another television station in the area, where he worked for a total of nearly 10 years. A product of Myers Park High school and North Carolina A&T State University, Jonathan is now covering the education system he was once was a part of. However, Jonathan likes to call himself a “Jack of all trades.” Expect to see him regularly covering all kinds of news, especially local stories and anything late breaking. Although he’s North Carolina native, Jonathan hasn’t spent the entirety of his more than 15 years in broadcast journalism in the state. He also spent 3 years as an anchor and reporter in the “mid-Michigan” city of Saginaw, MI and another 3 years as a multi-media journalist in the “Valley of the Sun,” Phoenix. His stories in those places ranged from wildfires to mountain of snow to an 11-day-long span where someone was shooting at vehicles on the interstate. Jonathan says those years taught about adjusting to new places while also building knowledge of the issues and stories that matter most to their citizens. Returning to the Tar Heel state to cover the community he has deep passion for is a opportunity he doesn’t take lightly. In the last 6 years, Jonathan has covered Hurricane Florence hitting the NC coast, social justice protests, and the impact of gentrification in the ever-growing city of Charlotte. He worked hard to lead coverage of decisions that have come out of the Charlotte city council and the Mecklenburg County Commission. In 2019, Jonathan took advantage of the opportunity to study for and pass the test to become an FAA-certified commercial drone pilot. The license allows him to fly a drone to capture aerial video for news stories. But, getting that certification only furthered Jonathan’s interest in aviation. Ever since the Fall of 2020, he’s been in pursuit of a private pilot’s license, training with a flight instructor out of Concord Regional Airport. When he’s not in the air, Jonathan is most likely working in another favorite place of his: the yard. He always looking for the latest tips to keep the grass green, weeds low, and flowers thriving! And, if it’s not a landscaping project, he’s most likely spending quality time with his long-time partner Matthew and their 3 dogs and cat.
