HICKORY, N.C.,None — Community members are invited to help build a playground in Hickory in honor of 10-year-old Zahra Baker.
The Zahra Baker All Children’s Playground will be at the Kiwanis Park at 805 6th Street SE, just off Lenoir-Rhyne Boulevard.
A community build is being held April 12 - 14. The effort to build the playground in three days will take hundreds of volunteers from the community, organizers said.
April 12's work will include the unloading and staging set-ups, while April 13 and 14 will be installing the playground equipment.
The Parks and Recreation Department is taking volunteer registrations until March 23 at 828-261-2248.
The community, businesses, foundations and grant funds have collectively donated more than $200,000 for the project. The playground, in which children of all abilities will be able to play, is in honor of Zahra Baker, who was killed at the age of 10 in the fall of 2010.
