• West Charlotte gun shop's ad banned on Facebook

    Updated:

CHARLOTTE - Hyatt Gun Shop in west Charlotte is finding itself in a social media battle after posting an ad. It was taken down almost immediately.

“Social media, like I said, is the most powerful tool out there,” said owner Larry Hyatt.

The ad was for a Veterans Day sale on safes and vaults. Hyatt said the ad was posted because the store didn’t feel like it violated Facebook’s policy banning ads for weapons.

Facebook said it still violated the policy and wrote, “The decision is final. Please consider this the end of our correspondence about your ad.”

Reporter Blake Hanson reached out to Facebook to get clarity but did not hear back.

Facebook’s website says ads cannot indirectly link back to pages where guns can be purchased.

Hyatt thinks there are too many hurdles for his and other small businesses that rely on social media.

“Amongst all other things we do, (social media is) absolutely necessary to small business. Without it we couldn’t do the business we do,” Hyatt said.
