Winthrop basketball team honors Sandy Hook victims

ROCK HILL — Winthrop University's men's basketball team paid tribute to the victims of Sandy Hook Elementary school in a game Saturday afternoon.

Becky Kowalski and Stephen Kowalski lost their son Chase Kowalski in the shooting. The Kowalski family came to Winthrop University to talk about the Chase Michael Anthony Kowalski Sandy Hook Elementary School Memorial Foundation and the Race4Chase fundraising initiative.

Members of the men's team paid tribute to the 26 victims of the Sandy Hook shooting in a special way. Each player wore the name of at least one child victim on the back on their uniform jersey.

The Kowalski family became acquainted with Eagles coach Pat Kelsey following this Ohio State postgame conference in Columbus, Ohio, on Dec. 15, 2012.
