Woman arrested in connection with hit-and-run that injured bicyclist, troopers say

BURKE COUNTY, N.C. — Troopers have arrested a woman in connection to a hit-and-run involving a bicyclist in Burke County.

The crash happened along Airport Rhodhiss Road on Saturday. Troopers said Jerry Lynn Crump, who was riding with another bicyclist, was struck from behind by a vehicle. Crump sustained injuries and was airlifted to a nearby hospital.

“I was very disappointed,” Crump told Channel 9. “I didn’t think they took the responsibility that they should have -- you know, left someone there that was obviously hurt. You don’t leave someone on the ground and drive off.”

Following the hit-and-run, troopers received a call from Victoria Kimmer, 29, who claimed to have hit a deer in the same area around the time of the incident.

Troopers said what looked like deer hair was in the shattered window.

However, they were able to match pieces of the car found at the hit-and-run scene to the caller’s car.

“There were some little fine red hairs that would make you believe she did strike a deer,” Trooper Daniel Lane said. “Come to find out, the lady has a small red dog, as well.”

Troopers said when they placed the car part they found on the road onto Kimmer’s car, she admitted to striking the bicycle rider.

The owner of the car, identified as Kimmer was arrested and charged with felony hit and run and failure to reduce speed.

“Once I confronted her about it, she admitted that she did hit the bicyclist but kind of panicked and was unsure of what to do,” Trooper Daniel Lane said.

Highway patrol said that they were continuing to investigate the case, and the accident reconstruction team would be seizing the vehicle to search for additional evidence.

Kimmer was given a $10,000 bond.
