Woman charged with DWI after motorcyclist killed in Catawba County crash

NEWTON, N.C. — A woman has been charged after a motorcyclist was killed in a crash Saturday night in Catawba County.

The crash happened just before 9 p.m. on Robinwood Road, near Grier Street.

Troopers said a 1999 Ford Escort was driving and tried to turn left into a private driveway when it failed to yield the right of way and collided with a Honda Nighthawk motorcycle.

The driver of the motorcycle, 50-year-old Kevin Shoemaker, was taken to Catawba Valley Medical Center, where he died from his injuries.

Authorities said 23-year-old Aleta Fisher, the driver of the Ford Escort, was arrested and charged with driving while impaired and felony death by vehicle.

She is being held at the Catawba County Detention Center under a $50,000 bond.

No other information has been released.
