Fort Mill teacher dies after fall from Lake Wylie dock

FORT MILL, S.C. — A Fort Mill teacher died Sunday morning after falling off of a dock near Lake Wylie.

Officials said Rebecca New, 31, died after the accident around 2:30 a.m. Sunday morning.

A York County School Board member said New was an art teacher at Gold Hill Elementary in Fort Mill.

Officials said she somehow fell off a 17-foot boat dock and landed on some metal poles, cutting her neck, on Here at Last Lane.

Wayne Bouldin, a school board member, released this statement:

"It is a very sad and shocking situation. It is very sad anytime we lose one of our employees. All the employees in our district are one large family."

Officials said New's funeral services will likely take place in Conway where her family is from.

Teachers at Gold Hill Elementary return to class on Wednesday and school officials said grief counselors will be available for them.

Students return to class on August 21. Grief counselors will also be available for students that day.
