BURKE COUNTY, N.C. — A Burke County mother called two men heroes for rescuing her from a burning SUV.
She was trapped inside the SUV after another driver lost control of his truck and hit her on Drexel Road.
She said she couldn't get out on her own, and that's when she saw the flames and smoke
"The car's on fire. The car's on fire. We've got to get her out," Julie Crump recalls the men saying.
It was the smoke and flames that had her immediate attention with no way to get out.
"I could see flames and smoke from my point of the vehicle,” Crump said. “One gentleman came to the passenger side door of the vehicle to get me out. He pulled the door open as far as it could go, and jumped on top of the vehicle to try to get it free."
Charlie Morgan owns an automotive shop across the street. When he saw the accident and fire, he grabbed an extinguisher and worked together with a second man to get Crump to safety.
"Just need to get her out of the car,” Morgan said. “She was hurt enough and didn't need to be burned or hurt worse."
She was airlifted to the hospital with injuries to both arms including a dislocated wrist. The North Carolina Highway Patrol said the driver of the white pickup truck loss control of his vehicle after going off the road to the right and then overcorrected, sending it across the center line.
Morgan doesn’t consider himself a hero.
"Just doing what needed to be done and help people out,” Morgan said. “This little, old community, we all pull together and was able to help somebody."
Crump considers the men her guardian angel and is thankful to be alive.
"They're definitely heroes because my children still have a mother thanks to these gentlemen," Crump said.
The other driver, who had minor injuries, was charged with driving left of center.
