Myrtle Beach expects big traffic this weekend

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — (AP) Heavy traffic is not unusual in Myrtle Beach, especially on Sundays as visitors head home from a weekend at the beach.

But there will be plenty of heavy traffic this weekend with several events going on in the same area.

The 26th annual Pee Dee Street Rodders Run to the Sun is set at the old Myrtle Square mall site along Kings Highway. Traffic along an eight-block stretch was reduced from three lanes to two for Friday and Saturday to help pedestrians.

Thousands of cheerleaders will be participating in a competition at the nearby Myrtle Beach Convention Center. Another 1,500 athletes are expected at nearby Doug Shaw Stadium.

City spokesman Mark Kruea says the city is happy to have the events, but drivers should be careful in the area.
