CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A rooftop QR code in the NoDa neighborhood has been verified as the world’s largest.
The code is 100 feet per side -- 10,000 square feet in total area.
In October, Southern Resources and Hackerspace Charlotte set out to paint the code on the roof of Southern Resources, a scrap metal recycling company.
The groups expected the QR code, also known as a Quick Response code, to break the Guinness World Record for the largest permanent QR code, previously held by Fiera Balzano Spa in Italy at 180.94 square feet. In January, they were notified that it had done so.
QR codes are two-dimensional barcodes that have become popular as a quick way to engage mobile users -- many mobile phones have barcode readers that, when used to scan QR codes, take users to a company's website for more information.
The code on the roof of Southern Resources became the first QR code visible on Google Maps.
