SC Lawmakers Could Approve More Tax Credits

South Carolina's budget-writing committee is considering a slew of tax credits for drivers, investors and businesses.

The House Ways and Means Committee will debate on Tuesday whether to give tax credits for buying or leasing plug-in hybrid vehicles, and installing solar energy equipment.

Other tax credit bills on the agenda relate to jobs. Proposals are meant to encourage wealthy people to invest in start-up South Carolina companies, and companies to locate or expand their headquarters here.

Critics have said the state can't afford to keep cutting into its revenue in this economy.

Earlier this month, the House passed a $5.3 billion spending plan for 2011-12 that closed a $700 million budget shortfall. It relied on the state's increased cigarette tax, reserves and cuts in Medicaid rates to help do that.
