School district's new school calendar doesn't comply with law, state says

IREDELL COUNTY, N.C. — Iredell-Statesville schools is responding to criticism of its 2019-2020 school calendar schedule.

The North Carolina Board of Education's Department of Public Instruction wrote a letter to the district this spring. It said the approved calendar doesn't comply with state law, and the district’s first day of school scheduled for Aug. 8 occurs before the legislated school start date.

A spokeswoman for the district told Channel 9 Friday the district is well within the perimeters of the calendar law. She also said support for the new plan is widespread among students and staff, and the district does not plan to change the calendar.

Leaders do not expect a challenge from the state.
