Some parents want answers after principal's sudden retirement

CHARLOTTE, N.C.,None — More than 50 parents, students and teachers met Wednesday at Rocky River High School.

The district wanted to hear their opinions on a new principal. What it got were questions.

"What is CMS' policy to get us information?" one parent shouted.

Many came demanding answers.

Parents speculate the sudden retirement of principal Mark Nixon and the "personal leave" of an assistant principal have something to with the arrest of four students accused of hazing a member of the wrestling team.

They said everything changed in the matter of weeks.

"We come in and strangers are in our school and people are dancing around our questions," parent Rita Mohrmann said.

CMS officials explained Wednesday's forum was not for asking those types of questions.

"This is a set meeting to discuss the profile," a CMS official told the crowd.

That response nearly led to some parents walking out. But they were convinced to stay.

CMS won't comment on the changes due to personnel issues, frustrating parents.

"When we're dealing with our children, we need to know all the information so we can make sound decisions," parent Terrence Bamberg said.

CMS has not set a timeline for choosing a new principal, saying it's more important to get the right person than to do it quickly.
