Suspect In Robbery, Chase Surrenders To Police

CHARLOTTE, N.C.,None — Police have arrested a man they were searching for in connection with a robbery and chase.

Police said 18-year-old Eli Hernandez called investigators from his mother's Charlotte home on Tuesday afternoon and said he wanted to turn himself in.

Police had been searching for Hernandez since Sunday night, when they said he was involved in an armed robbery at the Dairy Queen on Union Road and an ensuing chase.

"This thing Sunday night was a dangerous situation," Gastonia Detective Mike Chambers said. "We're glad nobody got hurt, and we're just glad to have all three guys in custody."

During the chase, which went into Mecklenburg County and through several Charlotte neighborhoods, Hernandez fired shots into an innocent driver's car, police said. That driver was not hurt.

Aaron Hall, 17, and Pervis Lewis, 17, were arrested shortly after the chase on Sunday, but officers could not find Hernandez.

Hernandez was out on bond at the time of Sunday's incident and had cut off his monitoring device, officers said. Police found the device at about 2 p.m. Monday, in a wooded area near Hernandez's home.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police took Hernandez back to Gaston County on Tuesday, where a magistrate judge gave him an initial bond of $10 million.

Hours before police arrested Hernandez, Hall and Lewis faced a judge, who increased both of their bonds to $1 million. Prosecutors said Hall was driving during Sunday's chase.
