Officials: 2 more days until low water pressure in Charlotte fixed

It could be days before crews fix water pressure problems for about 300 customers in northeast Charlotte.

That number is down from an estimated 40,000 homes Monday.

Officials said a broken valve at the Plaza Road booster pump station is the source of the problem.

Neco Heath said he could barely take a shower Tuesday morning because the water pressure was so low.

"The water wasn't pushing out as hard as it normally does. I couldn't really get anything done," Heath said.

He's just one of many residents in northeast Charlotte hoping the water pressure goes back to normal soon.

Brittany Taylor said she lives just down the road from the pump station. She said she first notice water issues this morning in the kitchen.

"When I cut on my hot water it shoots out normally, and it was just bland," she said.

Work to fix the broken valve began Tuesday morning.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — For the past two days, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Utilities Department crews worked around the clock to find what was causing low water pressure.

CMUD director Barry Gullet said they first noticed the issue Sunday afternoon when the water level in tanks they monitor wasn't rising.

Gullet said it's never taken this long to pinpoint a problem

"This is a very rare occurrence in Charlotte. Our water system is very reliable. It's very unusual for us to have any kind of wide spread problems at all," Gullet said.

Crews dug six feet underground to get to the valve. They're trying to fix the part that opens and closes the valve.

Water has been filling the affected tank since Monday night, causing water levels to be lower than normal.

Customers Channel 9 spoke to say they hope it's fixed soon.

"We need them to have good running water. Not low water that we can barely wash in, that's not's going to work" said Taylor.

Until the problem is fixed one lane of The Plaza will remain closed near the pump station.

CMUD officials said homes in the affected area will continue to have reduced pressure, but they shouldn't have outages.

Officials told Channel 9 the work should be complete by Thursday.

With water restored to a majority of CMUD customers, it's no longer operating out of their emergency operations center.

Those experiencing water pressure issues are asked to call CharMeck 311 (dial 311 or 704-336-7600).
