Indiana State Police in Sellersburg received a tip at around 7:30 p.m. that a local mushroom hunter had found the body of a Black male child near a roadway in a heavily wooded area of eastern Washington County, WXIN reported.

According to WTHR, authorities described the child as between the ages of 5 and 8 years old. He is about 4 feet tall, with a slim build and a short haircut.

Investigators believe the boy died sometime within the past week, the TV station reported.

“Somebody out there knows who this child is,” Indiana State Police spokesperson Carey Huls said, pleading for anyone with information to come forward.

Huls also told WTHR that investigators are not releasing information regarding the boy’s clothing or the specific area where the body was located but said police will canvass the area to determine if anyone has any video footage that could possibly help them in their investigation.

Troopers have not yet released a time or cause of death because an autopsy is pending, WXIN reported.

Anyone with information that might help identify the child is being asked to call Det. Matt Busick with the Indiana State Police in Sellersburg at (812) 248-4374 or (800) 872-6743.
